TuberKey is a computer-assisted system of interactive keys for the identification of truffles. This system, developed within the project "TUBER: biotecnologia della micorrizazione", is based on a character description conforming to the standard format  DELTA (DEscription Language for Taxonomy). To date, about sixtytwo characters are used to describe morphological and molecular features of Tuber taxa. The final goal of the project is to organize character descriptors for all Tuber and other related taxa.

The character description can be performed by many research groups by utilizing a front-end to the DELTA format accessible through the Web. Such a system does not require knowledge by the user of the DELTA syntax and allows consistency to the standard format of the input data. The data entry is done with multiple choice queries, numerical or text fields build directly from the character list.

The Character database in DELTA format is used in a computerized system for the interactive identification of truffles. To this end dedicated software such as INTKEY, DELTAccess and NAVIKEY can be adopted. A package consisting of the character database, images and experimental protocols is available on CD.
